I was inspired recently watching a program on OWN about women and aging. On the program, they featured an inspiring 75 year old fitness professional, Ernestine Shepherd (http://ernestineshepherd.net/). She started working out at 56 (56!)and after challenging life situations which resulted in anxiety and depression, she used exercise to overcome her anxiety and depression, resulting in not only an incredibly fit body, but also a fit mind.
I am inspired by her story for a few reasons. Firstly, it really is never too late to get into shape. No matter what age you are or what condition you are in, change is possible. Secondly, I am inspired by how this exemplifies the power of exercise / movement to heal your mind. Movement of all type, can be the door out of depression and anxiety.
I am not a scientist and am still learning about all the mechanics of our body, but intuitively I know this: our minds and bodies are delicately interconnected. When we take care of our bodies, we take care of our minds.
See how you feel after a Zumba class or after working out. We are all different, but many of us experience a mood shift, a natural ‘high’, bliss! This ‘high’ sometimes called the ‘runners high’ is caused by the release of endorphins. Studies show that endorphins are released when we exercise: “Endorphins are chemicals produced in the brain, which bind to neuro-receptors to give relief from pain. Discovered in 1975, endorphins are believed to: relieve pain; enhance the immune system; reduce stress; and delay the aging process. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, sending these chemicals throughout the body.” (http://www.cmha.ca/mental_health/benefits-of-good-mental-health/).
Taking care of your body will keep you feeling and looking young and it will also create a more joyful and peaceful you.
